Jacksonville, FL

Serving: Wolfson Children’s Hospital and
Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital

The Jacksonville Chapter of Once Upon A Room (OUR-JAX) launched in the Summer of 2019 with a visit from OUR Founders Jenny Hull, Josie Hull and Siena Dancsecs at the invitation of the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Child Life Specialist team. A small group of local volunteers immediately began transforming cold and sterile hospital rooms into personalized, fun and cozy spaces. OUR-JAX continues to grow with an active Women’s Council and annual special projects for patients. We encourage you to follow along on our Social Media to see all of the SMILES!

OUR SPECIAL PROJECTS

Easter

Every spring, OUR-JAX volunteers work closely with the Wolfson Child Life team to create Easter baskets tailored to age groups and particular patient needs. Every child (newborn to teen) hospitalized at Wolfson on Easter receive a basket filled with stuffed bunnies, activities, toys, books, puzzles and decorations.

Valentines Day

Valentines: Providence School and our teen crews from Creekside High, Bartram, Bolles, Episcopal and Providence provide craft bags for the kids at Wolfsons and Brooks. They enjoy having fun being creative about what kids of all ages would enjoy on this fun holiday.

Halloween

OUR-JAX volunteers work with the Child Life Specialist team bringing Halloween into Wolfson Children’s Hospital. We assemble a bag for each patient room in the hospital, distribute costumes to patients and assist with fun Halloween craft projects. We are so grateful for our community premiere sponsor LandSouth Construction and all our individual donors for supporting this amazing project!

Kate’s Kindness Project

In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, OUR-JAX joined the Kate Amato Foundation and created baskets of comfort items for children battling cancer at Wolfson and special goodies for their parents and caregivers. We loved this wonderful collaboration!

  • "Kenna started her journey at Wolfsons at 5 weeks old and would be in and out of the hospital during her first year of life. During one of these stays, Kenna was enduring many tests, and coordinated surgeries and it was a very difficult time for our family as we were split apart. Kenna went down for her surgeries and it was scary and emotional. When we returned to her room, our Child Life Specialist brought in a huge bag and explained that an organization called Once Upon A Room donated all the items specifically for Kenna. In the bag was bedding, wall decor, pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, toys, and monogrammed items. I was overwhelmed with emotion that it was so personal to her age and personality and it transformed her room into a nursery. Kenna had life-altering medical equipment and her room went from sparse and sterile, to overfilled with love. Our 8month old little baby started to shine again. She was able to recover and play on the floor with the items provided. She went from laying in bed to sitting and engaging with us. Those items brought our little sunshine back to herself. They gave us hope during a very dark time and it was something our whole family could celebrate even while separated. I keep all the items in Kenna’s room still as a reminder of how hard she has fought and all the support and love we were surrounded by during her journey"
